Anlässlich der 50-jährigen Städtepartnerschaft zwischen Berlin und Los Angeles realisieren wir unter dem Titel LA > X ein Filmfestival im Kino Arsenal, das von Marc Glöde kuratiert wurde. Den Auftakt bildet die Eröffnung unserer gleichnamigen Ausstellung auf dem Gelände der FAHRBEREITSCHAFT, bei der Arbeiten von Stephen Prina und Christopher Williams im Mittelpunkt stehen.

Von Stephen Prina wird die 14-teilige Arbeit Monochrome painting (1988/1989) gezeigt, die sich mit der Geschichte der monochromen Malerei auseinandersetzt. Darin finden sich Arbeiten in den Originalformaten von Kazimir Malevich bis Blinky Palermo reproduziert wieder. Stephen Prina hat die Leinwände zunächst „klassisch“ präpariert, sie anschließend jedoch in einer Autolackiererei einheitlich grün mit einem besonderen Lack für den VW Golf spritzen lassen. Es ist ein großes Vergnügen, diese Arbeiten in der FAHRBEREITSCHAFT zu zeigen.

Von Christopher Williams werden Ephemera präsentiert. Zwar geht es bei diesen Einladungen, Texten und Postern ebenfalls um Verweise auf seine Fotografien. Diese wurden jedoch nicht durch die Übernahme der Formate erzeugt, sondern durch die Wahl der Motive. In der Regel sind solche Einladungen oder Poster einfach produzierte „Streuartikel“. Williams überträgt seine Motive jedoch bewusst auf riesige Formate. Somit stellt er die Verhältnisse auf den Kopf und unterstreicht dies zusätzlich, indem er die Plakate aufwendig rahmen lässt.

Zwei Arbeiten von Margaret Honda bilden die Brücke zum LA > X Filmfestival. Spectrum reverse spectrum (2014) zeigt eine 70-mm-Filmrolle in ihrer Transportverpackung als Skulptur. Mit der zweiten Arbeit Film FAHRBEREITSCHAFT (2017) hat Honda eine Arbeit speziell für den Ausstellungsort entwickelt. Sie applizierte dafür Belichtungsfilter, wie sie bei der Produktion von Hollywood-Filmen eingesetzt werden, auf die Fenster im Empfangsbereich der Einsatzleitung. Je nach Einstrahlung der Sonne wandern die Farben durch den Raum.
