Diese Ausstellung ist eine „persönliche“ Ergänzung von Pacific Standard Time, einer Ausstellung über die Kunst in Los Angeles von 1950–80, die im Martin-Gropius-Bau gezeigt wird.
Die große Stringenz der Konzeptkünstler in Los Angeles im Allgemeinen, aber auch unsere persönliche Freundschaften mit Künstlern, die in Los Angeles arbeiten, haben die Entwicklung unserer Sammlung in den letzten Jahren entscheidend geprägt.
Ein Ausgangspunkt für die gezeigten Arbeiten sind die 100 Boots von Eleanor Antin. Die gezeigten Postkarten wurden von der Künstlerin Ende der 1960er Jahre „unaufgefordert“ verschickt. Sie zeigen jeweils 100 Gummistiefel, die anfänglich in geometrischen Formen aufgestellt wurden und im Zuge der Eskalation des Vietnam-Konfliktes immer stärker den Krieg reflektierten. Während diese Arbeit politisch aufgeladen ist, ist das Werk von Morgan Fisher rein formaler, strukturalistischer Natur (The Wilkinson household fire alarm). Aber gerade hier liegt die andere Wurzel für die heutige Arbeit jüngerer Künstler in L.A.
Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt der Ausstellung bilden die Arbeiten von Christopher Williams und Stephen Prina. Von ihnen werden in dieser Ausstellung bewusst nur solche Arbeiten gezeigt, die noch nicht in ihren jeweiligen Einzelausstellungen bei uns zu sehen waren (A, B, C, D und untitled (Study in yellow, Berlin) von Christopher Williams, Exquisite corpse: The complete paintings of Manet 222 of 556: „Dames aux éventails“, Haberdashery und Haubrok I (Push painting) von Stephen Prina).
Edgar Arceneaux, Rodney McMillian, Ruben Ochoa und Joel Tauber machen die dritte Gruppe aus. Diese jüngeren Künstler beziehen sich in ihrer Kunst stark auf ihr Umfeld und ihre persönlichen Beziehungen. Sie arbeiten politisch und drücken damit ihre Überzeugung aus. Dies gilt auch für Brian Kennon, der jahrelang Kunstbücher in seinem eigenen Verlag veröffentlicht und in ebendiesen seine ganz persönlichen Kommentare zur Kunst nach außen getragen hat.
