LA > X: Exhibition

September 15, 2017 – March 3, 2018
FAHRBEREITSCHAFT, Berlin

Margaret Honda, Stephen Prina, Christopher Williams

Opening: September 12, 2017, 7 – 9 pm

For the fifty-year anniversary of the sister cities Berlin and Los Angeles, we realize a film festival with the title LA > X at Kino Arsenal, curated by Marc Glöde. The prelude to LA > X was the opening of our eponymous exhibition at FAHRBEREITSCHAFT, focused on works by Stephen Prina and Christopher Williams.

The fourteen-part work Monochrome Painting (1988/1989) by Stephen Prina is on show, surveying the history of monochrome painting. Works in their original formats by artists ranging from Kazimir Malevich to Blinky Palermo are reproduced here. Stephen Prina first prepared the canvases in a “classical” way, but then he had them sprayed in a uniform green – with a special lacquer for the VW golf in an automotive paint shop. It is a special pleasure to present these works at FAHRBEREITSCHAFT.

Ephemera by Christopher Williams are shown as well. Although these invitations, texts, and posters also deal with references to his photographs, they were not generated by adopting the formats, but instead by the choice of motifs. Such invitations or posters are usually simply produced “promotional articles.” Williams, however, intentionally transfers his motifs to huge formats. He thus turns relationships on their head and further underscores them by having the posters framed in an elaborate way.

Two works by Margaret Honda form a bridge to the LA > X film festival. Spectrum reverse spectrum (2014) shows a roll of 70 mm film in its transport packaging as a sculpture. With the second work, Film FAHRBEREITSCHAFT (2017), Margaret Honda developed a piece especially for the exhibition venue. Honda applied exposure filters – like those used in the production of Hollywood films – to the windows in the entrance area of the Einsatzleitung. Depending on the angle of the sun’s rays, the colors wandered throughout the room.
