The drawings for Mathias Poledna’s animated film Imitation of life, created as the Austrian contribution to the Biennale di Venezia in 2013, are shown on the ground floor of the former Einsatzleitung (operations management building). The film, for which new characters were specially created, was made using the historical and labor-intensive technique of hand-produced animated films. The thirty drawings show a small bird that closes one eye and opens it again. Mathias Poledna surely chose this sequence for our collection due to its connection to a collaborative work by him and Karthik Pandian that can also be found in our collection (1991, 2010). In the latter work, one eye also closes, but that of a photo model.
