The works from our collection presented in the exhibition paperwork all examine the artistic treatment of paper. The show is held in the Einsatzleitung of FAHRBEREITSCHAFT.
Martin Creed, for instance, crumples or folds it (Work No. 218: A sheet of paper crumpled into a ball (US letter), 1999, Work No. 88: A sheet of paper crumpled into a ball (DIN A4), and Work No. 1262, both 2011). Stanley Brouwn deals with dimensions and units of measurement (A sheet of paper 1 × 1 Arschin (Bulgaria) and a sheet of paper 1 × 1 Pikhalebi (Abyssinia), both 2005), as does Jonathan Monk (My height in HB pencil, 2002).
Paper is also used to transmit information, even if it cannot necessarily be read. Examples are a book by Karin Sander and Harry Walter in braille (Skulpturen in Braille, 2007) and Martin Boyce’s work Thoughts that breathe (2011). A telefax by On Kawara (I am still alive, 1987) and book jackets by Paul Bonet (untitled, year unknown) are also shown.
Some of the works involved concrete, figurative drawings, such as animation sketches for a film by Mathias Poledna (untitled (Animation drawing), 2013), or abstract, barely definable signs like the works of Georg Herold (No desaster III, 1988) and Peter Piller (Bürozeichungen, Aachen mental maps, 2000). There are also austere compositions of straight lines such as by Florian Pumhösl (untitled, from various years) or Vaclav Pozarek (Kolonien, 2015). A single work of art can frequently be classified under several criteria. This is the starting point for an engaging examination of quite diverse interpretations.
